What is a CFE and why is it important?

A CFE is a Certified Fraud Examiner, a globally recognized designation awarded by the ACFE. This certification demonstrates that you have acquired knowledge in essential areas such as fraudulent financial transactions, fraud investigation, legal elements of fraud, and fraud prevention and deterrence.

The CFE not only gives you credibility and recognition in the field but also provides you with the tools you need to combat fraud and promote integrity in organizations.

Requirements to become a CFE

To become certified as a CFE, you must meet specific requirements:

  • Be a current associate member of the ACFE.
  • Meet the minimum academic and professional requirements.
  • Maintain a high moral profile and accept the Association’s Code of Professional Ethics.

Academic requirements usually include a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an institution of higher education. However, if you do not have a college degree, you may substitute with professional experience in the fraud field.

The CFE Certification Examination

The CFE certification exam consists of 500 questions divided into four sections: Criminology and Ethics, Financial Transactions, Legal Elements of Fraud, and Fraud Examination and Investigation. Each section contains 125 questions, and you have a time limit of 75 seconds to answer each question.

The entire exam lasts approximately 10 hours, and candidates have 30 days to complete it from the start of the program. You can take each exam section at your convenience, as long as you complete all sections within 30 days.
